Vancouver City Council recently approved building bylaws that impact your large commercial building clients. As a trusted contractor, get the facts on what is coming down the road so that you can help prepare them to meet greenhouse gas targets and the accelerated approach to climate action.

These buildings will be required to report their energy emissions in 2024 and will later be faced with greenhouse gas intensity limits and a new annual operating permit. Help your clients adjust their capital plans for major mechanical equipment. Be prepared for the leading-edge building owners who decide to accelerate their replacement plans ahead of the curve, with more efficient options like heat pumps.

As of July 1, 2022, a mechanical permit will be required for the installation and replacement of heating and cooling systems for new construction and existing buildings. Municipal Heat Pump Certification (MHPC) is mandatory for the installation of heat pumps by licensed contractors under the mechanical permit.
