August 2022

MCABC Members,

If you thought August was fun, it just keeps getting better and better! But before rushing ahead, a very big thank you to everyone – sponsors, golfers, volunteers and MCABC staff – who participated in and contributed to the success of the 2022 MCABC Golf Classic on August 11th at Northview Golf & Country Club. The numbers say it all: 288 golfers, 320 dinner guests, 28 sponsors and more than $4,000 raised for the Ending Violence Association of BC. A special thank you to the BC Lions for being a part of our annual event. Be sure to check out the Golf Classic 2022 photo album on MCABC’s Facebook page: Golf Classic 2022 photo album

Speaking of events, members will soon be switching up their clubs for cues at the September Pool Social & Tournament at Soho Billiards in Yaletown. It’s coming up fast – secure your tickets soon.

A special thank you to Gold Education Sponsor FortisBC for contributing to our commitment to educational excellence and continuous learning for MCABC members. We have a HOT LIST of key sessions targeted to the mechanical contracting industry and exclusive to MCABC members this coming month and into early October. Registration is well underway – please be sure to secure your spot.

Oct. 3-6: Developing Forepersons to Project Managers

MCABC’s Board of Directors continues to focus on delivery of an aggressive and exciting five-year plan. This month, I am very proud to share with MCABC members, the mechanical contracting industry, our municipal, provincial and federal government stakeholders and representatives and new construction and existing building partners, the specific background, experience and foresight of MCABC’s 11 focused and progressive Board of Directors. Learn first-hand who is at the forefront of Leading the Change for mechanical contractors in BC. Read MCABC Board of Directors Bios

MCABC believes that a strong governance structure is essential to the success of the mechanical contracting industry which continues to be impacted by supply chain and labour shortages. Advocacy and collaborative efforts with MCAC and industry stakeholders at the provincial and federal levels are ensuring a loud collective voice.

We were so pleased to hear on Aug. 24 of the federal government’s funding commitment to help employers with $21 million in funding for BCCA's Construction Industry. This funding will support small and medium-sized enterprises in BC to hire 2,100 first-year apprentices, over the next two years, in eligible Red Seal Trades. As the single largest representative trades group on new construction sites, comprising a total of 10 trades, mechanical contractors in BC will have an opportunity to benefit from the program that will be facilitated and administered by BCCA. Additional details about the program are available below.

As we transition to the fall, I would like to thank MCABC members for your continued support. MCABC staff is here to advance your interests, strengthen your positions and raise awareness of your economic impact. Your Association staff is comprised of professionals who are committed to the six pillars: Leadership, Education, Advocacy, Skilled Trades, Collaboration and Innovation. While focused, we also strike a balance of fun and wit. If you think you know of a good fit for our team, please send them our way. As part of our recent restructuring, we are recruiting for Education and Marketing Communications Managers.

Wishing you a relaxing and revitalizing September long weekend.

Biggest and Best Golf Classic Yet!

We had the best day at our 2022 Golf Classic, setting a new standard and demonstrating why mechanical contractors in BC should be part of MCABC events going forward. Not only was it our first-ever double shotgun with 288 golfers, but we also achieved 320 dinner guests and 28 sponsors! The team extends their thanks to everyone that took part in this monumental event, including our five superstar volunteers! This would not have been possible without the support of our members and mechanical contractors in BC.

After a blissful day in the sun, the ‘event cops’ hustled everyone into the banquet room for a delicious dinner and prize draws. We’re so excited to build on this success and bring more of what our members love to next year’s event.

Help us choose by sending your opinion to MCABC at with either "Best Ball", “Texas Scramble” or “Stroke Play” in the subject line.

Members Raise nearly $4,500 at Golf Classic to Help End Violence in BC

We are thrilled to once again be supporting the Ending Violence Association of BC (EVA BC), an umbrella organization that offers over 300 programs and services to combat violence. It was fun rubbing shoulders with Andrew Peirson and David Knevel of the BC Lions, who came out to support EVA BC’s Be More Than a Bystander Program, along with the Executive Director at EVA BC, Ninu Kang (pictured above). Knowing Your Limits Under the Builders Lien Act:

Joint session between MCABC, ECABC and RCABC

The Builders Lien Act provides a very useful tool in the toolbox of an unpaid subcontractor or trade contractor, but has set processes and timelines that must be followed in order to allow a subcontractor or trade contractor to avail itself of the Act’s rights and remedies. However, the Builders Lien Act is commonly misunderstood including with respect to certificates of completion, the claim of lien filing period and the holdback period.

Prepare for the future: The Journey to Net Zero - Complimentary event for members

We’re all talking about climate action but what does it actually mean for the mechanical contracting industry in BC? What steps is your company taking to facilitate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions?

How prepared are you to meet the targets that have been set by the federal, provincial, regional and local governments? It’s time to cut through the chatter of climate policy and get clear on the facts. Whether you are involved in new construction or the built environment, the journey to net-zero is well on its way. It’s time to catch up – time to prepare your business and your people for climate targets, new regulations and new “green jobs” in the mechanical contracting trades.

    Recruit Project Managers from Within!

Sometimes the best strategy for hiring new staff is to look at which current employees are interested and well-suited to an advanced role.

If you have any forepersons or field supervisors who are interested in becoming a project manager, we have the perfect course this fall that will provide basic and advanced tools for them to become effective project managers. For new project managers who need to deliver successful construction projects, this course introduces the essential tools of project planning and execution in a contracting environment.

This is a follow-up course to the popular ‘Identifying the Foreperson of Tomorrow’ course we ran last year with acclaimed instructor Professor Mark Wentz. We are excited to have him back to teach ‘Developing Forepersons to Project Manager’.

    Ammonia Safety Awareness

The Ammonia Safety Awareness Program was developed due to the rise of ammonia-related incidents and hazards over the past few years, including the tragedy at Fernie Memorial Arena.

Developed in collaboration with industry professionals, this program provides training and downloadable tools to fill in knowledge gaps and share best practices for maintaining ammonia refrigeration equipment and systems across their lifecycle.

    Help ensure:

    • effective maintenance is budgeted for and occurs according to regulation
    • employee training is adequate per regulation
    • replacement plans are made for equipment reaching end-of-life
