Prompt Payment the focus of MCABC's Meeting with the Honourable Nikki Sharma

On the heels of the recent announcement that Ministry of Attorney General staff had been directed to prepare Prompt Payment Legislation, MCABC CEO Kim Barbero and Chair Kyle Wisniewski met last week in Victoria with The Honourable Deputy Minister and Attorney General Nikki Sharma, as well as legal, policy and other Ministry staff.

“Consistent with its mandate of growing the economy, the government wants to ensure that businesses are paid promptly for work performed on construction projects," noted the Ministry’s announcement. "Evidence from other jurisdictions - particularly Ontario - suggests that legislation is working."

MCABC feels confident that the importance of and urgency for Prompt Payment Legislation is understood, a result of construction’s collective efforts to lobby for the legislation for many years; the Ministry’s effort to try and introduce it in the 2025 Fall session of the legislature reinforces that recognition.

“MCABC will continue to partner and collaborate with government and other associations and leaders in the construction industry to ensure prompt payment legislation is enacted in B.C.,” says Barbero.  “Certainty is necessary, particularly right now. It remains our priority that payment timelines are established and that there is financial security for workers and stability for employers.”
