Building a Greener Future, BuildForce Canada Report

A recently released report prepared by BuildForce Canada, Building a Greener Future: Estimating the impact on construction labour demands from transitioning buildings in Canada away from fossil fuels, considers the implications of retrofitting existing buildings to improve their energy efficiency and reduce their carbon footprints to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The following is a statement from MCABC CEO Kim Barbero:

"MCABC would like to acknowledge the work of our national organization, MCAC, which served on the industry steering committee for the recently released BuildForce Canada report. The report outlines a challenging road ahead to retrofit Canada’s buildings that will require as many as 57,000 additional construction workers to meet the reduction targets established by the Government of Canada. MCABC is a proponent of minimizing emissions in existing buildings and we would also like to take this opportunity to draw attention to the urgent need to address the ongoing labour shortages in the mechanical contracting industry. MCABC continues to work in partnership with stakeholders to address labour shortages and ensure we have the workers required to build a greener future for all Canadians."
