Meet the 2024/2025 MCABC Board of Directors

MCABC continues to feature our newly elected 2024/2025 Board of Directors. Our MCABC Board Members are passionate advocates, innovative thinkers and collaborators.

Meet Simon Miller, MCABC Board Director

Simon understands that when mechanical contractors work together, they create real positive change and lasting results.

Simon is the President & Founder of Porcupine Mechanical, a heat pump installation company located in Squamish, BC. Simon approaches leadership with the belief that everyone is worth consulting and should have a voice. “Everyone has their own ideas of how to accomplish things. I think it’s important that as a more senior leader, I define the scope and enable people to work within that scope. And then, I give them license within that scope to lead their area.”

Also, Simon thinks strategically, and he believes that continued growth of MCABC’s membership will help drive public interest in mechanical contracting. “Promoting the skilled trades through MCABC will help the membership with their recruitment efforts and create a funnel of people that will apply for jobs in the industry.”

WorkSafeBC - Tower Crane Notice of Project

Please note, new regulations to improve tower crane safety in B.C. come into effect on October 1, 2024.

The new regulations will require employers to submit a Notice of Project (NOP-TC) to WorkSafeBC for certain tower crane activities, including erection, climbing, repositioning, and dismantling. An NOP is written notice provided to WorkSafeBC for certain work activities.

As of October 1, every B.C. employer responsible for any tower crane activity described above must ensure that WorkSafeBC receives a written NOP-TC at least two weeks before the tower crane activity starts. The NOP-TC must include:

        • The names and contact information for the parties responsible for the tower crane activity
        • Address or location of the workplace
        • Nature and scope of the tower crane activity
        • Start and estimated end dates of the tower crane activity
        • The make, type, model, serial number, and configuration of the tower crane
        • A site-specific workplan for the workplace during tower crane activity
        • The qualifications of the person identified as the qualified supervisor for the tower crane activity or confirmation that this person has their qualifications registered with BC Crane Safety

These new regulations will provide WorkSafeBC with vital information to engage employers, ensure site specific risks are being evaluated, confirm supervisor qualifications, track tower crane activities, and improve tower crane safety in B.C.

The Federal Plastics Registry - What Mechanical Contractors Should Know Webinar

On April 20, 2024, the Federal Plastics Registry was established, with reporting obligations to be triggered as early as next year. The purpose of the registry is to track plastics usage and lifecycle data, and is part of the government’s plan to reduce plastics pollution. Under this registry, there may be some reporting obligations on the part of contractors and their suppliers.

In this webinar brought together by the Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada and McMillan LLP, lawyers from McMillan will provide an overview on the Plastics Registry, considerations and potential implications for mechanical contractors, and take questions from participants.
